Memory boxes for loved ones of Intensive Care Patients
East Surrey Hospital Intensive care unit cares for people from much of the Gatwick Diamond (From Caterham to Horsham, including Gatwick Airport itself) when they need critical life saving care.
When a loved one passes away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the experience can be sudden and deeply traumatic for families. The intensive care team want to help families facing this grief to maintain a connection with their loved ones through creating memory boxes — to hold cherished memories, keepsakes, and remember shared experiences that provide comfort and support. To assist in the healing process, the team have put together bespoke memory boxes, effectively a toolkit for nursing staff, filled with items and resources to support grieving families, especially children.
We are asking for GDB member companies to consider if they could contribute £1500 to help the team provide the first batch of these boxes.
These memory boxes will include thoughtful items such as inkless handprint kits, supplies for keeping locks of hair, memory boxes, forget-me-not seeds, and a collection of books and soft toys (with a pouch for a valued keepsake). All tailored to support children and adults as required.
Who you will help
Your support will directly benefit families in the Gatwick Diamond coping with the unexpected loss of a loved one in the intensive care unit.
By contributing, you're helping to provide these families with meaningful keepsakes and resources, including books that help children understand and process their grief, and soft toys that offer comfort. These items are essential for creating a supportive environment that helps families feel less alone during this challenging time, and you will be helping adults and children
