Rare bee found at Seaford Head

Your feedback

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey a few weeks ago. We were pleased to hear that we are getting it right with the types of content we are emailing you. Most of you said you wanted more information about identifying wildlife and more local news, which we will be sure to take on board.
For many of you, there was a feeling of frustration about the state of wildlife and you want to know what more you can do. Over the coming months, we will send you more ways you can take action for wildlife in Sussex.
Finally, many of you wanted to hear more positive stories and to find out more about the impact Sussex Wildlife Trust has on nature locally. This is something we will definitely be doing more of, but here are four recent successes:

  1. Area off Sussex coast now a designated Highly Protected Marine Area
  2. Ancient woodland in Sussex saved from Center Parcs development
  3. Arundel A27 bypass stopped
  4. Historic kelp forest in Sussex lost for decades, begins to flourish

Don't forget, one of the best ways you can have a positive impact on wildlife is by becoming a member. Join 40,000 other people who are taking a stand to protect wildlife in Sussex.

Rare bee at Seaford Head

The Potter Flower Bee is one of the rarest bees in the UK. It is now only found at Seaford Head Nature Reserve and two other locations in Britain. It nests in the cliffs at Seaford Head, making its burrows in the sandy soils that sit on top of the chalk here. Because of this, it is very vulnerable to erosion by the sea.
It is difficult to know how it will fare as our climate changes, but conservation work by the Sussex Wildlife Trust does at least ensure that the nature reserve at Seaford Head provides good quality habitat and a good supply of pollen and nectar.
James Power, author of The Bees of Sussex (published in February 2024), tells us more in his guest blog.
