Summertime Blues
Blue butterflies are some of the most stunning insects to be found in the UK. They are a treat to spot on a hot summer's day, fluttering over the grasslands of the South Downs. Most blue butterflies have a close relationship with ants. The caterpillars produce a sweet secretion from their 'honey' gland to feed the ants. In return, the ants offer the caterpillars protection as they grow.
Butterfly expert Alan Sumnall offers a thorough guide to one of our most enchanting groups of butterflies.
